In 2017 the Mohammed bin Rashid Global Initiatives (MBRGI) set up an innovative project called the One Million Arab Coders (OMAC). The initiative was launched by UAE Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to bring free coding expertise to one million Arab youths around the world in order to empower them with coding skills - or the language of the future, according to Sheikh Mohammed - and to open the doors of opportunity toward building a brighter future.
The initiative is open to any young person with Arab citizenship living anywhere in the world; Applications have been received from countries including Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. The goal is essentially to empower the Arab youth, providing them with free access to some fundamental skills to increase employability and motivate them to take pride in their future.
How does it work?
As the initiative is worldwide based, companies were involved to provide the means to set up the courses online. It is essentially an e-learning initiative, where tutors provide coding classes in order to teach the applicants. What happens is that students choose the free coding programme in which they want to be enrolled in, and they are given a tutor. The tutor posts the sessions online and the student goes through each pre-recorded lesson, and subsequently completes tests and examinations. At the end of the programme, each student will graduate with a certificate. With over 400,000 applications from Arabs around the world since October 2017, the programme is expected to grow even more in the next few months as the initiative is expanded and developed.
Phase 2: GetBEE
Considering the GetBEE know-how in building live communities of experts, the board of the project has decided to expand the programme further incorporating the GetBEE solution in order to boost the project and achieve top quality results from students. Through GetBEE, the students will count on live tutoring sessions which enhance students engagement and, therefore, increase the number and the quality of the graduate students. The live tutoring allows students and teachers to connect and interact more effectively and the solution will also provide a means for teachers and tutors to monetise their efforts.
We are very proud to be chosen as the technology to empower mentors in delivering live tutoring sessions to the students enrolled in the One Million Arab Coders project!
